Sat, November 11, 2006 - 12:02 AMSure, especially in the North. Poland has been invaded by just about everybody for the past 1500 or so years. Mongols, Tartars, Turks, Austrians, Swedes, Germans, Russians. Not to mention mercenaries fighting with the armies of each. Poles are one of the most diverse genetic pools in Europe. Up near the Belarus border are a couple of Tartar villages. They even have beautiful wooden mosques. I'm going to visit them this winter. -

Sun, November 12, 2006 - 10:32 PMYes, on the photo. Poland used to be a lot bigger. It encompassed parts of the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Germany. The Soviets redrew the maps, creating the countries you see today. I'm constantly talking to Poles who say, we had land, or estates, or a house in these places, sometime in the not so distant past, but lost it. Michner wrote a book in English titled "Poland", It is an interesting historical novel, well written, and quite factual. I recommend it to anybody who wants to try to understand the Poland of today. Lots of interesting parallels. -
